Summer time is approaching fast and it time for a new fresh look, but, money is tight; what can you do? If you’re working on a budget and want to look great this summer, you’ll find that it’s actually pretty simple to create some great looks without spending a fortune.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Just a T-Shirt
So you have a drawer full of plain old t-shirts, but, aren’t really hip on wearing them? Not a problem! You can spruce them up in no time with just a little bit of effort. Most local craft stores have a variety of iron on graphics or letter that can give it a touch of your own personality. Another great way to dress up a t-shirt is by taking things from those t-shirts that don’t fit anymore. If you have a shirt with great graphics but it is too snug, cut out the graphics and sew them onto another t-shirt. This can give it a nice 3-d look and adds a lot of character to a plain t-shirt. Make it original – there’s no rule that says you have to sew things in a specific spot; use several and put them all over the t-shirt. This is a great way to let you clothes tell the story of you and your life.
Don’t Throw Out Jeans and Skirts
While you’re doing your spring cleaning it will be tempting to throw out things from your closet, like jeans that are too short or skirts that you just don’t wear anymore. Remember, you’re on a budget here, so don’t be so hasty! Take the jeans and cut them down to shorts with a finished or a frayed hem and they can look fab again. Get creative and add some embellishments to them to really make them stand out. You try beading, iron on patches or appliqués and really make them cute and wearable with a lot of different tops.
As for the skirts, if they’re long in length, make them shorter and be ready for the warm summer days. You can also mix and match them by taking pieces from one skirt and adding it as a ruffled hem on another. If you are handy with the sewing machine, cut the skirts up and make one patchwork skirt with the material from all the skirts. These patches of material can also be used on those t-shirts that were talked about earlier.
Go Retro
Another great way to make t-shirts look bright and fun for summer is by tye-dying them. This was super popular in the 60s and is definitely making its way back onto the fashion scene. It’s easy to do and all you need is a bit of dye and some rubber bands. If you’re not adventurous to attempt a Do-It-Yourself dye job, there are kits available that give you step by step instructions. The amount of color you can add to a wardrobe is endless, and all your friends will think you are so talented and creative; you don’t have to tell them how easy it is.
Make Your Own Hip Jeans
If all the jeans hanging in your closet are old fashioned and boring, take a pair of scissors to them. You don’t have to go out and spend a small fortune on jeans with holes in them; you can make you own. After you make the strategically placed holes, wash the jeans a few times to get just the right frayed look around the holes. This is a tip that can save you a ton of money because designer jeans are pretty expensive.
With just these few tips you can have you friends thinking you went on a shopping spree for the summer months. Just take the compliments and keep your secrets to yourself!
